Gryphon

 

Gryphon es una banda británica de rock progresivo formada en la década de 1970, que destaca por su sonido e instrumentación inusuales. El multiinstrumentista Richard Harvey y Brian Gulland, su compañero graduado de la Royal Academy of Music y músico de instrumentos de viento, fundaron el grupo como un conjunto acústico, mezclando folklore tradicional inglés con música medieval con influencias renacentistas y arcadianas. Poco después, el guitarrista Graeme Taylor y el baterista y percusionista David Oberlé se unieron al dúo.

Después de su primera aparición pública, ampliaron su sonido para incluir guitarras eléctricas y teclados junto con instrumentos de viento, como el fagot y el crumhorn, nunca antes utilizados en el rock. La música de Gryphon a veces suena mucho a canciones populares rurales inglesas o canciones del Renacimiento, pero también a rock, al menos en sus primeras grabaciones. Después de su tercer álbum (Red Queen a Gryphon Three) y una gira superior como banda telonero de Yes, su instrumentación se volvió más convencional y se redujo el uso de instrumentos inusuales.
