The Complete Buddy Holly

 

Buddy Holly es considerado uno de los primeros artistas del Rock & Roll, pero sólo tiene la oportunidad de disfrutar de la fama durante unos años. Murió en un accidente aéreo el 3 de febrero de 1959, junto con la estrella juvenil Ritchie Valens. Sus canciones más conocidas son 'Peggy Sue', 'That'll Be The Day' y 'Brown Eyed Handsome Man'.

Charles Hardin Holley (aún con e) nació el 7 de septiembre de 1936 en la ciudad de Lubbock, Texas. Es el menor de una familia de cuatro hijos. La familia es musical y cuando Buddy tiene 15 años toca la guitarra, el banjo y la mandolina. Junto con su amigo de la infancia Bob Montgomery, escribe y ensaya canciones y actúan como Buddy & Bob. En 1955, justo antes del avance de Buddy, incluso actuaron como teloneros de Elvis Presley.

Rock & Roll

Al principio tocan principalmente música occidental y bop, pero a medida que Buddy escucha más música blues y R&B, su estilo musical cambia a algo que empieza a parecerse al rock & roll. Contratan a un baterista y un bajista, pero luego Bob decide dar por terminado el día. Sigue involucrado con la banda por escrito. Buddy sigue presionando por un sonido de rock & roll, pero todas las grabaciones que hacen siempre tienden hacia el lado country. Él mismo tiene la sensación de haber perdido el barco del rock & roll al grabar estas canciones.

That'll Be The Day

El productor Norman Petty les da a los chicos otra oportunidad y les permite grabar un disco en su estudio. Tiene buen oído para la música popular y dirige a los chicos cuando es necesario. Grabaron su primer disco, 'That'll Be The Day', en 1956. El título es una cita de la película de John Wayne, The Searchers. Sin embargo, debido a asuntos legales con la compañía discográfica, el disco no se publicó hasta 1957. La canción saltó a la posición número 1 en las listas estadounidenses y se convirtió en el éxito del verano de 1957. Los derechos de autor no estaban a nombre de Buddy, porque él era el dueño de esa canción. En ese momento tenía dos contratos discográficos; uno para su banda The Crickets y otro como solista. Actuación

La popularidad sin precedentes de Elvis está fuera de toda duda en Estados Unidos, pero en Inglaterra Buddy Holly parece emerger como el artista musical más popular. En parte por su gira por Inglaterra en 1958, que duró casi un mes, pero también por su aspecto cotidiano, se convirtió en el favorito del público británico. Buddy se inclina cada vez más por establecerse en Nueva York, donde también vive y trabaja su esposa María Elena Santiago. Sin embargo, los otros Crickets se quedan en Texas como su base de operaciones y la banda se separa en 1958. Cuando resulta que el manager Norman Petty ha llenado su propia cuenta bancaria con contabilidad creativa y ha defraudado al resto de la banda, Buddy decide enriquecerse también haciendo muchos conciertos.

El día que la música murió...

Se une al Winter Dance Party Tour del Medio Oeste americano. Realiza esta breve gira junto con Ritchie Vallens y JP "Big Bopper" Richardson. Durante un vuelo de esta gira, el avión se estrella y matan a todos los que iban a bordo. Buddy tenía sólo 22 años en ese momento. Buddy Holly sirvió como fuente de inspiración para muchos músicos incluso después de su muerte. Graham Nash y Allan Clarke formaron parte de la banda inglesa The Hollies durante un tiempo y la banda The Searchers también debe su nombre a la película de John Wayne del mismo nombre.
