That's Entertainment!

 Cabe señalar que esta edición de 2006 de la caja de seis CD de Rhino That's Entertainment: The Ultimate Anthology of MGM Musicals es un esfuerzo prodigioso, tanto en su alcance como en su calidad, así como en la ingeniería de audio, aunque bien puede frustrar a los propietarios de la edición anterior de 1995, que usaba el mismo título pero tenía una portada diferente y una programación de canciones diferente, especialmente en el disco seis. De hecho, en el momento del lanzamiento de este último a mediados de los años 90, esta era fácilmente la descripción general más completa de la producción musical de un estudio de cine que se podía encontrar en CD. Para empezar, Rhino fue la primera licencia de audio de este material, desde los días en que MGM tenía su propio sello discográfico -y no siempre fueron conocidos por ser estrictos con la calidad- para tener acceso no solo al audio original de fuentes de primera generación, pero, en este caso, fuentes de audio restauradas. En algunos casos, esto significa que se obtienen las pistas musicales sin mezclar de las sesiones de grabación de la película original (algo que pocas personas tuvieron el privilegio de escuchar antes de los años 90), mientras que en otros casos, permite escuchar la masterización, elementos a partir de los cuales se crean bandas sonoras de películas terminadas y restauradas. Y en esta edición, aproximadamente un tercio del material ha sido remasterizado utilizando la tecnología más avanzada disponible en la década siguiente, así como mejores fuentes que se han descubierto; y se ha eliminado parte del material, en su mayoría de películas más conocidas que ahora están representadas por sus propias bandas sonoras ampliadas, por lo que aquí hay menos de Judy Garland y Mickey Rooney, y se representan menos canciones del Show Boat de 1951. Pero la música está en su estado óptimo; y eso significa que los bajos y la percusión son profundos y retumbantes, las voces están al frente y altísimas, y los metales y los vientos tienen el tipo de mordiente que uno asocia con la grabación de alta fidelidad, todo dentro de los límites de la tecnología del siglo XXI e investigación de bóveda. Para ser justos, no todos los temas aquí florecen de la misma manera en su sonido; algunos de los popurrís, especialmente "Singin' in the Rain", que están relacionados con el tema real That's Entertainment o That's Entertainment, pt. 2 secuencias de películas, son más fáciles de apreciar si has visto las películas; y es difícil imaginar a alguien que compre este set y no haya visto ambas películas más de una vez.

Los discos uno y dos nos llevan a través de los aspectos más destacados musicales de That's Entertainment, mientras que los discos tres y cuatro están dedicados a That's Entertainment, pt. 2. En cada caso del material de esas películas, las pistas representan números completos, en lugar de los extractos editados utilizados en las dos películas antológicas, y considerando que la mayoría de las películas representadas aquí son anteriores a finales de los años 40 y, por lo tanto, nunca tuvo lanzamientos de bandas sonoras propios, eso solo realza el valor de este conjunto (uno puede "cuadrar" su valor para los aficionados a la música serios). El quinto disco es una reedición directa de That's Entertainment, pt. 3 CD de banda sonora. La principal diferencia entre este conjunto y la edición anterior radica en el disco seis, que ha sido cambiado por completo: en lugar de atar cabos sueltos de las otras antologías, ese disco ahora contiene 25 tomas descartadas de las bóvedas de MGM, muchas de ellas nunca antes escuchadas o solo disponible anteriormente en doblajes de baja calidad, y entre los aspectos más destacados se encuentra la interpretación completa de Fanny Brice de "My Man" de The Great Ziegfeld y una demostración de Lee Wiley de "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man", y Kay Thompson interpretando "Weekend At The Waldorf." Algunos fans estarán molestos por la pérdida de ciertas pistas que estaban en el sexto plato de la edición original y, de hecho, esta reedición ha resultado algo controvertida en ese sentido, y tal vez hubiera sido preferible un conjunto de siete discos o un eventual lanzamiento separado del disco seis aquí, para aquellos que ya poseían el conjunto anterior.

A nivel técnico hay que señalar las inevitables debilidades en un conjunto como éste. Lo más importante es que siempre habrá cierta compresión en la música de cualquier tipo grabada antes de finales de los años 40, incluso si se conserva perfectamente, pero los archiveros e ingenieros de Turner Entertainment y Rhino han reunido un cuerpo sorprendentemente satisfactorio, varios cientos de artistas y pistas sólidas, que abarcan territorios desde los años 20 hasta los 70. En segundo lugar, aunque las credenciales musicales involucradas en el 99 por ciento de lo que hay aquí son impecables, esto fue, en el fondo, un esfuerzo por crear material visualmente estimulante, por lo que faltará algún elemento en el atractivo de gran parte de lo que hay aquí, en términos de lo que se pretendía hacer. Pero eso no significa que, separados de las imágenes, los elementos de la música no puedan florecer por derecho propio.
