John Smith & The New Sound

 

John Smith, que anteriormente formó parte de la banda de skiffle Jubilee, firmó un contrato en solitario con Parlophone en la década de 1960 y lanzó sencillos bajo el nombre de Bobby Dean. Siendo dirigido por Bill Wellings, terminó en el sello Top Six de EMI haciendo versiones de canciones. Estos se lanzaron en el Reino Unido y Alemania y tuvieron cierto éxito. El sello discográfico Vogue lanzó estas canciones con el nombre original, pero también como The Four Kings, así como en varios sencillos de 7". Las versiones del tema original "Winchester Cathedral" de New Vaudeville Band y el éxito de The Royal Guardsmen "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron" figuraron en las listas de popularidad. A finales de 1967, John Smith se fue y se mudó a Australia, donde continuó su carrera musical.

En 1968 esto dejó a Bill Wellings con una banda pero sin vocalista. Decidió continuar usando el mismo nombre con varios vocalistas en PYE Studios en Londres (esto se hizo sin el consentimiento o conocimiento de John Smith). El vocalista principal de un grupo llamado "The Excheckers" cantó mucho. Otro vocalista que participó en estas grabaciones fue David Byron, quien hizo voces en varias pistas para dos álbumes de John Smith y New Sound que siguieron bajo el nombre original. Los álbumes Rockin' With John Smith y Rock & Roll Again With John Smith se lanzaron en 1968, pero no se acredita que se encuentre la voz de David. Estos lanzamientos presentaban portadas con fotografías de la banda original, pero la cara de John Smith fue eliminada de esas fotos.
