Ignoro quien fue el compilador de esta selección y no pude encontrar referencia alguna en la web. Si bien la compilación es buena y la música es bastante atrayente, con algunos cortes muy conocidos, creo que hay algunas cosas que no tienen mucho que ver con el glam, como Judas Priest, Boney M o Marilyn Manson (el maquillaje que ocupa dista mucho del glam y se acerca más al monster de Kiss o Lordi), salvo pequeños detalles vale la pena escuchar los cinco discos, que van relativamente en orden cronológico. pass: manchon1961

125 Greatest Glam Rock Stompers

 

El glam rock es subgénero del rock nacido en el Reino Unido, cuyo apogeo tuvo lugar entre 1971 y la década de los 80. Su nombre es un apócope de la palabra «glamour».​ Nació en una época en la que el rock psicodélico derivó hacia unos estilos que abusaban del virtuosismo y los largos desarrollos en las canciones, en perjuicio de la frescura que se podía encontrar en el viejo rock'n'roll.​ Por ello, muchos artistas, como Marc Bolan de T.Rex y David Bowie, comenzaron a buscar esa sencillez perdida.
Si por algo se caracterizaba este estilo era por dar tanta importancia a su música como a su estética (o, mejor dicho, su estética era también parte de su música). Así que frente a la imagen de macho-rock imperante en esos días, se rebelaron dando uso masculino a elementos del vestir tradicionalmente femeninos y exhibiendo una actitud descarada y provocativa.
El pionero fue Marc Bolan, entre cuyos "hallazgos" estéticos se encuentran los estampados de leopardo, las chisteras, las botas de pluma y la purpurina. Conforme iba creciendo el género, se fueron popularizando los trajes futuristas brillantes, las botas con plataforma, los peinados imposibles y los kilos de maquillaje y purpurina que utilizaban. David Bowie también contribuyó a la estética como en el maquillaje al inspirarse en las travestis neoyorquinas del entorno de Andy Warhol, por cuya estética sentía predilección. Otra banda en influenciar la estética glam fueron los estadounidenses The New York Dolls con su ropa de vinilo y colorida, peinados cardados, aspecto travestido y maquillaje que también dio paso musical al posteriormente naciente punk rock. Así nació la extravagante imagen glam, que solo podía haberse dado en una década tan propensa a los excesos estéticos como la de los 70.
La guinda en el pastel la puso la teatralidad que ostentaban en sus actuaciones, tomada directamente de las actuaciones de Lindsay Kemp y del teatro de vanguardia.
Algunos de sus pioneros y máximos exponentes son David Bowie, Elton John, T. Rex, Gary Glitter, Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Sweet, Slade, Queen, Sparks, Kiss, New York Dolls, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper y algunas de las canciones más famosas son «Starman», «Ziggy Stardust» (ambas de David Bowie), «Get It On», «20th Century Boy» (ambas de T. Rex), «Rock & Roll part one», «Rock & Roll part two» (ambas de Gary Glitter), «Cum On Feel the Noize» de Slade (popularizada más tarde por Quiet Riot), «Fox On The Run», «The Ballroom Blitz» (ambas de Sweet), «This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us» de Sparks y «Killer Queen» de Queen.
